Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) en de European Biogas Association (EBA) brachten een derde versie van de 'European Biomethane Map' uit. Deze publicatie is een update van de tweede 'European Biomethane Map' die in 2020 uitkwam. Deze uitgebreide kaart lokaliseert 1.174 productie-installaties van de 1.322 gekende biomethaaninstallaties operationeel in Europa. Daarnaast zijn voor elke installatie op de kaart specifieke details terug te vinden zoals de injectiecapaciteit, de inputstromen, opstartdatum en het type opzuivering. De gegevens op de kaart werden aangeleverd door de nationale associaties en (energie)bedrijven.
Met 299 nieuwe installaties in vergelijking met twee jaar terug kan een stijging van 30% vastgelegd worden. Het aantal installaties kent een lineaire toename sinds de start van de kaart in 2018. Verder wordt een shift in gebruikte inputstromen waargenomen naar landbouwresiduen, OBAs en afvalwaterslib. Er worden nagenoeg geen nieuwe installaties gebouwd die enkel op energiegewassen werken. De koplopers in biomethaanproductie zijn Duitsland, UK en Denemarken.
